colorful capsules by 100architects turn empty lot into playful public space at hengqin island

Global architecture and design firm 100architects transforms an underused coastline walkway into a vivid public place on Hengqin Island, China. Titled Green Skyline, the project features a series of capsules with distinctive silhouettes that compose a colorful landscape visible from Macau. Featuring interactive elements such as telescopes and playful seating arrangements, the urban intervention offers a new spot to stay and socialize. The capsules’ outer surfaces are deliberately colorful and visually engaging, while their inner surfaces are finished in warm wood, offering a cozy place to spend quality leisure time. ‘The project adds much-needed amenities and eye-catching platforms that promote outdoor lifestyle and social interaction among citizens, while creating a strong visual identity for Hengqin Island,’ explains the studio.

The Green Skyline project by 100architects redefines the waterfront space, enhancing the community’s outdoor lifestyle and social interaction. The Shanghai-based firm gives each capsule a specific purpose: some facilitate social gatherings and casual conversations, while others are equipped with playful installations like swings, seesaws, and slides, offering entertainment and leisure. An array of umbrellas with various seating configurations on the city-facing side invites visitors to relax and socialize in the shade. At night, LED strips illuminate the project, highlighting the skyline silhouettes. This lighting fosters an experience full of rhythm and color, transforming the surroundings into a human-scale urban landmark.
